Permanent Makeup Brows: What to Expect From Your Appointment, Healing & Retouch.
If you're considering permanent makeup brows, one of the most important things to understand before booking is that permanent makeup is a process, not typically a one-and-done appointment.
Your Initial Appointment creates the foundation for your brows. Your skin then needs time to heal before the true color and pigment retention can be evaluated.
A Retouch Appointment is typically recommended after healing to complete the initial brow process.
Knowing what happens at each stage and what is included in the pricing can help you make an informed decision and know what to expect before booking.
Understanding the permanent makeup brow journey from initial mapping and healing to your retouch appointment and long-term maintenance.
Your Initial Brow Appointment
Your first appointment is where your new brows are designed and created.
Before tattooing, I carefully map and measure your brows based on your facial features, any natural brow growth that is present, and the look you want to achieve.
You'll have the opportunity to review the design, discuss your preferences, and request reasonable adjustments. Tattooing begins only after you have reviewed and approved the final shape.
Pigment color and technique are customized based on your skin type, color preference, and overall brow goals.
Immediately after the procedure, your brows will typically appear darker and more defined than they will once healed.
Fresh brows are not healed brows.
What to Expect While Your Brows Heal
Freshly tattooed brows will typically appear darker and more defined at first. As your skin heals, the color will gradually soften and lighten.
You may experience some flaking or temporary unevenness during healing, and some areas may retain more pigment than others. Not everyone experiences the same healing stages.
This is normal because everyone's skin heals and retains pigment differently.
Skin characteristics, sun exposure, skincare, lifestyle, aftercare, and your individual healing response can all influence pigment retention.
Because it's not possible to predict exactly how your skin will retain pigment until your brows have fully healed, the Retouch Appointment is an important part of the permanent makeup process. It allows me to evaluate your healed results and refine any areas that may need additional color or definition.
During healing, brows may temporarily appear darker, lighter, patchy, or uneven before the color settles. Individual healing and pigment retention vary.
Why is the Retouch Appointment Important?
A Retouch Appointment is typically recommended approximately 5-8 weeks after your Initial Appointment, once your brows have had adequate time to heal.
At this appointment, I can see how your skin actually retained the pigment.
I evaluate the healed color, retention, shape, and balance. Areas that healed lighter or unevenly can be refined, and pigment selection, saturation, or technique may be adjusted when appropriate.
If there are concerns with shape, balance, or symmetry, your brows can also be remeasured or remapped as needed. Any proposed shape adjustments are reviewed with you before tattooing.
Some clients need very little refinement, while others need more building.
Rather than unnecessarily oversaturating the skin during the first appointment, I work according to your actual healed result, with skin integrity and long-term results in mind.
The Retouch Appointment completes the recommended initial permanent makeup brow process. If you choose not to return for your Retouch Appointment, the initial brow process has not been completed.
That's why I recommend planning for both appointments and their associated costs before deciding to have your brows tattooed.
Is the Retouch Included in the Initial Price?
Permanent makeup artists structure their pricing differently.
Some artists include the Initial Appointment and Retouch Appointment in one total price. Others price each appointment separately.
When comparing permanent makeup prices, don't look only at the advertised number. Consider asking:
Does the price include one appointment or two?
Is the Retouch Appointment an additional cost?
When should the retouch be completed?
What happens if additional refinement is needed after healing?
At Luna Luxe Beauty Lounge™, the Initial Appointment and Retouch Appointment are separate services and are priced separately.
This allows the cost and purpose of each stage to be clear before you begin.
It might seem easier to simply add more pigment during the first appointment, but more pigment is not necessarily better.
Permanent makeup should be approached with skin integrity and long-term results in mind.
An artist can carefully select the pigment and technique for the initial procedure, but no artist can know exactly how every individual's skin will retain pigment until it has healed.
Allowing the skin to heal before adding more pigment provides information that simply isn't available on day one.
The Retouch Appointment can then be customized based on the client's actual healed response rather than unnecessarily oversaturating the skin during the initial procedure.
What If I Need Another Touch-Up?
Most clients complete their initial brow process with their Initial Appointment and Retouch Appointment.
In rare cases, once the Retouch Appointment has fully healed, additional refinement may be appropriate. If you have concerns about your healed results, please contact me within 5–8 weeks after your Retouch Appointment so I can evaluate your brows.
If I determine that additional refinement is appropriate, a complimentary touch-up may be offered within the recommended timeframe.
Complimentary refinement is not routine maintenance and cannot be saved, transferred, or used later as a future Color Boost Retouch.
What If I Already Have Permanent Makeup?
If you already have permanent makeup and are considering seeing a different artist for new work, a correction, or a refresh, the existing permanent makeup must first be evaluated, even if it is old or faded.
Permanent makeup performed by another artist is not considered a standard Retouch Appointment with me. It is common within the permanent makeup industry for retouch pricing to apply to an artist's own existing work, while work performed by another artist is evaluated as new or corrective work.
When working with another artist's existing permanent makeup, I need to evaluate the color, shape, saturation, skin condition, and amount of pigment still present to determine the appropriate approach. Please also disclose any previous laser or saline removal performed in the treatment area.
Depending on what is present, your service may be considered new work or corrective work. In some cases, additional lightening, removal, or healing may be recommended before new permanent makeup can be performed.
Before booking, I may request clear, makeup-free photos taken in good natural lighting. Photos should be unfiltered, unedited, and clearly show the entire treatment area and any existing pigment. A consultation may also be recommended when additional evaluation is needed.
Before & Healed Result | Brow Correction + Permanent Eyeliner
Older permanent makeup can shift in color as it fades. This is why I include a color assessment with every client to evaluate existing pigment and choose the appropriate approach. This client completed saline lightening before correction. Individual results vary.
Why Does Permanent Makeup Fade?
Permanent makeup is a form of tattooing, but it is approached differently from traditional body tattooing.
Permanent makeup is typically applied more superficially and with softer, less dense saturation, with the goal of creating natural-looking cosmetic results. Traditional body tattoos are generally designed for stronger saturation, bolder color, and long-lasting artwork.
The pigments used can also be formulated differently. Permanent makeup pigments may contain inorganic, organic, or hybrid colorants, and pigment selection is based on the area being treated, your skin characteristics, existing pigment, and the desired healed result. Traditional tattoo inks may also contain organic or inorganic colorants, but they are generally formulated with body-art saturation and longevity in mind.
Because permanent makeup is placed in living skin, your body naturally interacts with the pigment over time. Skin characteristics, pigment formulation, sun exposure, skincare products and treatments, lifestyle, and the natural aging process can all influence how the color softens or changes.
Gradual fading can be beneficial because it allows your brows to be refreshed as your features, hair color, preferences, and existing pigment change over time.
The goal is not to continually add more pigment simply because a certain amount of time has passed. Color Boost Retouches should be based on how your brows have actually faded, helping maintain a natural result while avoiding unnecessary pigment buildup.
Long-Term Maintenance & Color Boost Retouches
Once you've completed your Initial Appointment and Retouch Appointment, you can enjoy beautifully defined brows with less daily maintenance.
There is no need to keep returning every few weeks.
Over time, the color will gradually soften and fade. When your brows have noticeably faded and you want to restore their color and definition, you can schedule a Color Boost Retouch.
Many clients may consider a Color Boost around 1-3 years, but there is no universal schedule.
I prefer to evaluate how much your brows have actually faded rather than automatically adding pigment based only on how much time has passed.
This helps minimize unnecessary pigment buildup and allows your permanent makeup to age more naturally.
Did You Know?
You may spend more each year maintaining your nails and lashes than on permanent makeup. PMU offers everyday convenience while being designed to soften and fade naturally over time.

Think of the process this way:
The Permanent Makeup Brow Journey
Initial Appointment → Healing → Retouch Appointment → Enjoy Your Brows → Color Boost When Needed
Initial Appointment — Your brows are designed and created.
Healing — Your brows soften and the color settles as your skin heals.
Retouch Appointment — Your healed results are evaluated and appropriate refinements can be made. This completes the recommended initial brow process.
Enjoy Your Brows — Once your initial process is complete, enjoy your brows as they gradually soften over time.
Color Boost Retouch — Future maintenance when your brows have noticeably faded and you're ready to refresh their color and definition.
Permanent makeup is a personal decision, and understanding the process before booking is just as important as choosing your artist. My goal is to help you know what to expect from your Initial Appointment, healing, Retouch Appointment, and long-term maintenance so you can make an informed decision with realistic expectations.
